Costa Rica 2010

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in Aviary at Peace Lodge - 33

Rose-breasted Grosbeak in the rain.

We went to Costa Rica again in 2010 and this time we visited Poas Volcano region, the incredible and wild Osa Peninsula in the south and Manual Antonio on the central western coast of this beautiful country.

First we stayed at the Peace Lodge near Poas Volcano, an incredible lodge with nearby trails, an aviary, frog pond some beautiful cloud forests. It was cloudy and it rained on and off so we never did see the volcano, but the kids loved staying at this amazing lodge. Then we were off to the Lookout Inn at the end of the road on the beautiful Osa Peninsula. This place is so beautiful we shouldn’t even write about it for fear of it being ruined!

We landed in Port Jimenez, a small town across the bay from Golfito. Then we took a 70 km 4×4 cab ride over half a dozen rivers to Carate and the end of the road. Just a few kilometres walk down the beach past the end of the road is the gate to Corcovado National Park. It was hot, hot, hot here, about 37 C every day and nearly 100% humidity.  We saw wild Tapirs, a flock of 28 endangered Scarlet McCaws – a siight to behold. The wildlife was everywhere. From our breakfast table on the outdoor perched deck of the Lookout Inn we say monkeys, a boa constrictor, a beautiful iguana and dozens of other species of birds and mammals. You must look through the photos to believe it! Then it was off to La Posada Inn just outside Manual Antonio National Park on the central west coast. This was our second stay near this busy national park. It was the Easter weekend so the beach was full of Costa Rican families. The park is home to white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys and the very beautiful squirrel monkeys. The howlers let loose at night as the different groups – one inside the park and one outside the park – bellowed back and fourth with their ominous sounding calls.

This was a trip of a lifetime, which is funny because this was actually our second trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica. I hope you enjoy this little vicarious journey to Costa Rica.

Here is a set of photos of the Butterflies of Costa Rica.
